This explains what the Scarred Society community (community.scarredsociety.com and chips.scarredsociety.com) collects, why, who can see it and what you can ask us to do with it. It sits alongside the store privacy policy, which covers shopping with us.
Who we are
Scarred Society is a trading name of TPB Shop Ltd, a company in the United Kingdom. We are responsible for your information. Contact us any time at info@thepeacockbrothers.co.uk.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and the name shown on your profile. If you sign in with your store account, we also keep your Shopify customer ID so your two accounts stay linked; if you use Google, your Google account ID.
- Chip scans: which chip you scanned and when, plus a rough location worked out from your internet connection: your town or city and a point accurate to about 1 km. We never ask for or store your exact location.
- Your chapters: what you write, who you chose can read it, and whether you posted it without your name.
- Sober-since date (optional): only if you choose to add one. This is health information, so we treat it with extra care (see below).
- Alerts and reports: notifications we send you, your answers to them, and any reports you make about a scan or post.
- Technical logs: our hosting providers keep short-lived logs (such as IP addresses and error details) to keep the site running and secure.
Who can see what
- Chip pages are public. Anyone can see a chip's number, how many people have held it, the countries and distance it has travelled, and a map of its route. Map pins are rounded to about 10 km so they never point at someone's home.
- You choose who reads your chapter: Everyone, Chip holders (anyone who has held that chip, now or in future) or Just me. You can change this at any time.
- Your name appears next to your chapters unless you choose to post without it. Signed-in members can see each other's profile names.
- Scarred Society admins can read every chapter, including private ones, so we can keep the community safe and respond to reports. Every time an admin views chapters, it is recorded in an audit log.
- Your sober-since date is visible only to you, unless you choose to show it on your profile. Our admins cannot see it. This is enforced by our database, not just a promise.
- The QR code on each chip is a secret. Whoever scans it can add the chip to their profile, so please don't post photos of the QR code online.
Why we use it (our legal bases)
- To run your account and the chip journeys you take part in: this is necessary to provide the service you signed up for.
- To keep the community safe (moderation, admin access to chapters, undoing scans that were not handed on) and to keep the site secure: our legitimate interests in running a safe recovery community.
- Your sober-since date: only with your explicit consent, which you give by adding it and can withdraw by removing it.
We never sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Services we use
- Supabase stores our database in London, United Kingdom.
- Vercel hosts the website. Pages may be served from data centres outside the UK, under standard data protection safeguards.
- Shopify handles "Sign in with your store account".
- Google handles "Continue with Google" if you choose it. We receive your name, email address and Google account ID, nothing else.
- OpenFreeMap supplies the map images. Your browser loads them directly, so OpenFreeMap sees your IP address when a map is shown.
- Email for sign-in links and codes is sent by Supabase or our email provider.
Cookies
We only use cookies that are needed for the site to work: one keeps you signed in, and one protects you while you sign in with your store account. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies on the community.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and chapters while your account is open. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your profile and private information and remove your name from your chapters. A chip's journey keeps the anonymous fact that it was scanned in a town on a date, so the chip's story still makes sense for its other holders. Audit and safety records are kept for as long as needed to protect the community.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop or limit how we use it. Email info@thepeacockbrothers.co.uk and we will reply within one month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Age
You need to be 16 or over to join the community.
Changes
If we change how we use your information, we will update this page and, for important changes, tell you before they take effect. See also our community terms.
